Driving Safety Culture Insights at Torrens Connect

Torrens Connect is a key operator in Adelaide’s public transport network, responsible for delivering safe, reliable tram services to the community. Recognising that a strong safety culture is vital to supporting both frontline performance and passenger wellbeing, Torrens Connect sought to better understand the attitudes, perceptions, and experiences of their workforce. They engaged Work Safety Hub to facilitate a comprehensive safety culture survey, providing insights to guide future improvement.

Work Safety Hub led the end-to-end delivery of a safety climate survey, tailored to capture the unique dynamics of Torrens Connect’s workforce. This included survey configuration, communication planning, survey administration, data analysis, and reporting key findings. We engaged closely with leaders and teams to ensure participation was meaningful, and the results provided actionable insights. Our work supported Torrens Connect in identifying strengths, uncovering opportunities, and laying the foundation for continuous improvement in safety leadership and frontline engagement.

CHALLENGES

  • Understanding Workforce Perceptions
Gaining an accurate and honest view of employee attitudes towards safety required building trust and encouraging open feedback.
  • Engaging a Diverse, Shift-Based Workforce
With teams operating across various shifts and roles, ensuring broad participation in the survey posed logistical and communication challenges.
  • Avoiding Survey Fatigue
Workers had experienced surveys in the past, so ensuring this process felt different—meaningful and action-oriented—was key to securing engagement.
  • Tailoring Communications for All Levels
Crafting clear, consistent messaging that resonated with both frontline workers and leadership required a thoughtful communication approach.
  • Capturing Insights Without Disruption
Running the survey without disrupting day-to-day transport operations meant balancing efficiency with ensuring quality participation.
  • Turning Data into Action
Converting survey results into clear, practical insights that would lead to real workplace improvements was critical to maintaining credibility.
  • Building Leadership Buy-In
Ensuring leaders understood the value of the survey and were committed to acting on the results was vital for lasting cultural change.
  • Maintaining Trust Throughout the Process
Employees needed to feel confident that their feedback was confidential and that participating would lead to positive changes—not blame.
